Chapter Twenty-One

Jade

Once I make it to my bedroom, Dani’s words come back to me. She’s right, you’re being stupid, Jade. Who cares what they think of you! I’ll get the information I need in order to deal with whoever is out to get me and use my siren skills to get rid of them, once and for all. I have a pretty good idea of who that is though.

Tony didn’t pull me into that alley to have a party with his friends. If Savage hadn’t shown up, I could have found out who and why someone wants me dead. But I’m still a bit shook up, wondering whether or not Tony would have killed me today. So, it’s probably a good thing that Savage did show.

I heard Tony’s conversation the last time he was here, and now I’m pretty sure it was about me. And if so, what did he tell me that I shouldn’t know? I just can’t imagine what I could have heard that would make someone want to kill me. I groan aloud; yeah, definitely have to find out what the guys know.

That decided, I head into the kitchen to pour another whiskey in order to help fortify myself against my mates unfounded suspicion of me, their irritating smirks–and after the way I practically dry humped Savage in front of them–their knowing glances.

As I pour the amber liquid, I’m startled by a thump, followed by a tapping against my sliding glass door, and I almost drop the whiskey. Setting the crystal decanter down, I snatch a butcher knife out of the wooden block next to me. I want to get the jump on whoever it is, so I move toward the balcony on silent feet, with my knife held low next to my hip. Pushing away doubts about my fighting skills, I suck in a breath and prepare to battle whoever thinks they’re coming through that window.

I yank the blinds open with a snap and come face to face with a balloon string. Releasing the air I was holding in one long whoosh, I giggle in relief and I look up to find a large yellow happy face balloon. Smile is scrawled across the front in large white letters with dark blue flowers peeking out behind them. Stupid balloon, mocking me with it’s stupid happy smile.

The balloon ribbon is wrapped around the side of the wrought iron railing, with just enough of it hanging in the wind that the plastic weight on the end hits the glass door with each newly blown gust. I roll my eyes and shake my head at my antics. That’s me, about to have a war with a fucking balloon.

I unwrap it and bring the balloon inside before stabbing it right between the eyes. Giving my best evil villain laugh, I shove the know it all balloon into the trash bin under the sink. And as I straighten, I catch a glimpse in the window of someone standing behind me, just before they slip a wire around my throat.
